Broken Aperture
Developed by DinoByte Softworks LLC, in Broken Aperture, players are immersed in a rich, narrative-driven experience that explores deep and emotional themes. The game follows Freya, a character grappling with profound personal loss and trying to make sense of her fractured world. As Freya, players navigate through beautifully crafted environments, uncovering pieces of her past and piecing together the story of her life, love, and loss.
Entrance to Freya's Apartment
As the sole Level Designer for this game, I was tasked with making the layout of the main gameplay area which is Freya's Apartment. Freya lives with her husband Adam and their daughter Sarah. Throughout the Apartment, there is a multitude of boxes. At this point in the story, Freya, Adam, and Sarah are still in the process of moving in.
Freya's Home Garden
This section of the apartment is the Home Garden. Freya has some what of a Green Thumb and we wanted to show that side of her in the apartment level. Setting up windows to allow sunlight in for the plants, dirt and tipped over buckets to show signs that Freya has recently been in this Garden, and a special plant in the middle as the center point of intrest to pull the entire scene together.
Kitchen Area
When tackling the Kitchen Area, I wanted the walking space to flow well with the rest of the apartment. I even took some reference from my own apartment layout at the time and brought them up in discussions with the team. The overall goal was to make this apartment feel, lived in and the way we tackled that goal in this scene is by having an assortment of items laying out. For example, the chip bags, pots over by the stove, an open cabinet door, and dishes in the sink.
Sarah's Room
Sarah is at the age where she is starting to discover her interests, hobbies, and who she would like to become as a person. The various posters, desk, and globe are all signs of her character development over time. The globe is a sign that she is takes in interest in core studies, and the teddy bear is a significant symbol in the Broken Aperture story.

Trying to stay very close to that lived in feel, the living room has a board game on the table, that has yet to be started, some books underneath the coffee table, and a controller sitting out on the TV stand. Keeping the same flow throughout the apartment, I had to make sure all assets in these scenes had the right spacing for the player, so they are not bumping into random objects during gameplay.
